If a man dies and has no child but only a sister, she will inherit half of what he left. And the man will be the heir of his sister if she [498] has no child. However, if there are two sisters, they will inherit two-thirds [499] of what he left. If there are brothers and sisters, males and females [500], then the share of the male is equal to the shares of two women [501]. Allah explains to you clearly so that you may not go astray [502]. And Allah knows everything.

178. O you who believe! Prescribed upon you is legal retribution [387] for those murdered: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female [388]. But whoever is pardoned by his brother [389], then let there be a suitable payment to him (the heir of the deceased) with good conduct. This is indeed a concession from your Lord and a Mercy [390]. He who transgresses [391] thereafter, then for him is a painful torment.
